City Bird (Avis Civitatis) offers a contemplative reflection on life in the modern metropolis.
The persistent presence of police helicopters in the urban sky has become an unremarkable part of city life. While they symbolize protection and security, their constant visibility and noise are intrusive, evoking a sense of surveillance and unease.
The composition is constructed from months of photographs capturing large city-dwelling birds from a balcony vantage point. The resulting image is a visual reconstruction that echoes the dramatic cloudscapes and city views of Jacob van Ruisdael.
This work explores the ambiguity of safety in the urban environment: what are we willing to relinquish in exchange for life in the big city?
Stadsvogel (Avis Civitatis) is een reflectie op het leven in de moderne metropool.
Politiehelikopters die regelmatig door het luchtruim vliegen, horen inmiddels bij het leven in een grote stad. Ze bieden ons bescherming en geven een gevoel van veiligheid, maar tegelijkertijd zijn ze luid, zichtbaar, opdringerig en zorgen ze ervoor dat je je constant bekeken voelt.
De compositie is opgebouwd uit een compilatie van maandenlang vanaf het balkon gefotografeerde grote stadsvogels; een visuele reconstructie die doet denken aan de stadsgezichten met dramatische wolkenpartijen van Jacob van Ruisdael.
Het werk verbeeldt het gevoel van ambiguïteit rondom veiligheid; wat zijn we bereid op te offeren om in een grote stad te wonen?
